Classes Offered at LMC!

Archaeology: What is archaeology and what exactly does an archaeologist do? We're not talking Indiana Jones here! Learn basic techniques archaeologists use to uncover information about past cultures. Students will get their hands dirty in this one!

Astronomy: (weather dependent) This class explores the awesome night sky. Students will take a planet hike, make their own constellation, identify major constellations, and much more!

Community Dynamics: A school favorite! Build group skills and coopration on our low ropes challenge course led by trained LMC staff. Move your team across the Amazon or through a spider's web! Seasonal: Climb our 40-foot Alpine Wall!

Creative Writing: Using LMC's amazing outdoor environment as subject matter, students will delve into a variety of creative writing techniques including diamante, cinquain, descriptive poems, and haiku.

Discovery Hikes: From forest to pond to field to meadow, we have a hike for you! Explore the various habitats of wildlife, use all your senses to discover the little known or seen, hike to Homestead ... the posibilities are endless!

Eco-Bible Study: This class is a new one offered to schools, though we've been doing it for years! Learn about God's Creation and how we can be the stewards of the Earth that we are called to be!

Forest Study: Studying the form and function of trees, different types of forests, forest ecology. The studies are conducted in our pine forest, as well as our beech/maple forest, with some fascinating opportunities for exploration.

Geology: We are excited to offer a look at Ohio'svarious geological formations, hiking along Alum Creek, discovering the history rocks reveal to us.

Habitat Study: LMC has a variety of habitats to explore including pond, forest, field, and stream. What defines a habitat? Why are animals specific to certain habitats? What happens when a habitat is altered? These questions and more will be explored in this hands-on class.

Handicap Simulation: This class strives to fostor awareness and appreciation for people living with one mor a variety of handicaps. By experiencing a glimpse of a variey of handicaps, students will learn their role in developing relationships with and providing support for others who are different than themselves.

Living History: A highlight of LMC's program. Travel back in time and experience frontier life in Ohio in 1810. Meet characters from the time period, and see if you can successfully travel West!

Maple Syruping: (late February/early March) Learn how maple syrup was made by the Native Americans and explore the various techniques through America's history to create this sweet treat! The students will learn tree identification techniques, tap their own maple tree, visit our Maple Sugar Shack, and challenge their taste buds - can you tell which one is the "real thing?"

Native American Studies: Our region is full of Native American history! LEarn about the culture of Ohio Native Americans, and explore their impact on modern society through games and hand on activities.

Orienteering / Map and Compass Skills: Learn to use map and compass, map out your own trail, and take the challenge of our orienteering course at LMC!

Ornithology: The glorified term for "Bird Study!" In this class, students will explore the adaptations of birds have that make them unique. Bird identification techniques will be practiced during our discovery hike and visity to our bird blind. Birds specific to Ohio will be the focus of our exploration.

Outdoor Living Skills: This class focuses on survival techniques. The students will learn hands-on how to build a fire, construct a debris shelter, signal for help, find direction, etc.

Pollution Studies: Students will learn through hands-on activities about water, air, and land pollution and how it affects our environment. Explore with our EnviroScope!

Pond Study: Students will explore the ecology of "House Lake" through a variety of activities. Discover the importance of wildlife and plants specific to the pond ecosystem.

Predator / Prey: Through a variety of active games from Project WILD students will explore adaptations both predator and prey must have in order to meet their survival needs. Students will also discover how populations are affected by both animal and human acticity. You won't be sitting down for this class!

Stream Study: Water quality studies conducted in Alum Creek, which runs right through LMC. Also looking at water cycles and stream ecology. The students will take measurements and make observations about the stream, with the finale of catching some stream critters!

Teaching Garden: (Seasonal) Explore our organic garden and learn about organic gardening techniques and why this stewardship is important, help us do some planting, and taste some fresh produce!

Weather Study: Wherever you go, weather is bound to happen! Learn about various weather instruments and how they are used, study weather patterens and phenomena, and make your own weather predictions during your stay at LMC!

Wild Edibles: (Seasonal) This class takes the students into the forest to discover and learn about the over 30 wild edibles that are located at LMC. A seasonal class, so take advantage of it during the fall and late spring!

Wildlife Study: Explore habitats, adaptations, predator/prey relationships, human impact, etc. through observation and hands-on activities. The possibilities are endless in our 400-acre environment!
